Labor Day Weekend– the unofficial end of summer. It’s that crazy time of year when the weather is still hot, yet we are anxiously awaiting all things pumpkin spice and the crisp fall air to greet us as we exit our homes each morning. With school back in session, the kids and adults are ready to unwind a bit over the long, holiday weekend after the chaos of the first (or few) weeks of a new routine under their belts. But before you warm up the grill, jump in the pool and light those sparklers, take a moment to brush up on our safe Labor Day picnic tips to keep the whole crew protected this holiday weekend.

This Grill is Hot Hot Hot!

Grilling is great, tasty fun, but can cause some serious damage to your property (or your body!). Make sure to take the proper precautions at your next BBQ before turning up the heat.

• ALWAYS keep the grill outside. Never grill indoors – in the house, camper, tent or any enclosed area. Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.
• Make sure the grill is firmly placed on the ground to prevent tipping over.
• Use utensils with long handles to avoid burns and splatters (ouch!)
• Have your fire extinguisher ready!
• Need to step away for just a second? Find someone to keep a careful watch over your BBQ as you should never leave a hot grill unattended.

Just Keep Swimming…Safely

• When the whole family, or friend crew gather to celebrate a holiday, it’s easy to get distracted. If you are incorporating swimming into your gathering…
• Never leave a child unattended in the water or pool area for any reason.
• Stay out of the pool during rainstorms or during thunder or lightning.
• Don’t swim if you’re tired or just finished eating.
• Check the pool area regularly for glasses, bottles, toys, or other potential accident hazards.

Your Own Festival of Lights

Although fireworks can be entertaining, they can also cause serious injuries. Be sure to follow the following safety tips at your next gathering:

• Never allow young children to handle fireworks and older children should use them only under close adult supervision.
• Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
• Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire.
• Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.
